Kendal Man Pleads Guilty to Sex Offences Involving a Child

A 62-year-old Kendal man, Stephen Wetton of Garden Street, has been placed on the Sex Offender Register after pleading guilty to three sex offences involving a child.

Wetton entered his guilty pleas at Carlisle Crown Court on [date of court appearance]. The offences were detailed as follows:

• Attempting to cause or incite a 13-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity on April 27, 2020.
• Attempting to cause or incite the same 13-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity on May 5, 2020.
• Attempting to sexually communicate with a 13-year-old between April 15, 2020 and May 20, 2020, for his own sexual gratification, knowing or believing the person was aged 13.

Wetton's defense barrister stated that he was a man of previous good character and requested a pre-sentence report. The barrister also confirmed that Wetton is aware that he has been placed on the Sex Offender Register.

Judge Nicholas Barker informed Wetton that the duration of his registration on the Sex Offender Register will be determined by the length and nature of his sentence. The judge set the sentencing date for May 26, granting Wetton bail until that time. A background report will be prepared in the meantime.
