Former Children's Charity Worker and Imam Jailed for Grooming Boy Online

Umar Dawood, 36, from Redditch in Worcestershire, was sentenced to three years in prison at Worcester Crown Court on June 10. He previously pleaded guilty to three charges related to grooming a boy online. Dawood, who worked as a children's charity worker and served as an imam, admitted to causing a boy under 13 to engage in sexual activity.

He also received a nine-month concurrent sentence for attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and a one-month concurrent sentence for possessing extreme pornography. Dawood was ordered to register as a sex offender and given a sexual harm prevention order.

According to West Mercia Police, Dawood held a position of trust within the community, teaching children and volunteering with a local children's charity. Det Sgt Pete Wheeler, of West Mercia Police's child sexual exploitation team, stated that the investigation ensured Dawood would not be able to work with children in the future.

"This outcome will hopefully provide reassurance that this type of offending has attracted a custodial sentence," Wheeler added.
