Gravesend Bar Manager Sentenced to Seven Years for Sexual Assault
A Gravesend bar manager, MD Wahiduzzaman Akanda, has been sentenced to seven years in prison after being convicted of sexual offences against a woman.
The incident occurred on the evening of October 2, 2020, at Akanda's place of work. He pressured the victim to consume alcohol, despite her repeated refusals. Akanda forced her to drink a mixture of cocktails and shots, causing her to become ill.
The 39-year-old then followed the victim into the women's restroom, where he sexually assaulted her despite her pleas for him to stop.
Another person heard the victim crying and attempted to check on her welfare. However, Akanda assured them that she was fine, and the individual left.
After Akanda left the restroom, the victim locked herself in a cubicle, called the police, and left the premises. Akanda was apprehended and arrested the following day.
Akanda was charged with two counts of sexual assault but pleaded not guilty at Maidstone Crown Court. Following a trial, he was found guilty.
On Wednesday, February 28, 2024, Akanda, formerly of Railway Street, Gillingham, was sentenced to seven years in prison.
