A SOUTHAMPTON student sexually assaulted an unconscious woman who was so drunk she vomited, a court heard.
Southampton University student jailed for sexually assaulting unconscious woman
Yang Wang, 23, was sentenced to 12 months in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years after being found guilty of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman.
The assault took place on March 2, 2023, in a "snug room" at Cumberland Place Halls of residence. CCTV footage played in court showed Wang groping the woman while she was unconscious and laughing as he did so.
The victim, who could not remember the incident, did not provide an impact statement. Prosecutor Natasha Dardashti stated that the woman would not have consented to being touched.
Wang initially declined to comment during his interview with police but later admitted to the assault after viewing the CCTV footage. In a statement read out in court by his lawyer, Justin McClintock, Wang expressed remorse, stating: "I fully accept that my behaviour is such that I sexually assaulted this female. I am appalled by my behaviour and what I have done."
Mr McClintock argued that Wang, a high-achieving student, was "ultimately very immature." However, Judge Nicholas Rowland described the assault as "ugly and serious," highlighting the victim's vulnerability due to her unconscious state.
