Woman spotted sex offender in the garden while putting her kids to bed.
Convicted Sex Offender Sentenced to Hospital Order for Theft and Harassment
A convicted sex offender, Bairon Cross (34), who had been evicted from his home, was sentenced to a hospital order after he turned up at his ex-partner's parents' house in Preston.
Cross, who had been calling the woman repeatedly, was spotted by her in the garden as she put her children to bed. He then knocked on the door and refused to leave when she asked him to. He verbally abused her, calling her a "tramp," and stole her parents' laptop. Cross resisted arrest when apprehended in Kent Street, Preston, but was ultimately overpowered and taken into custody.
Cross has a history of mental health issues and has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. In February 2024, he was deemed fit to plead guilty to charges of theft and failing to comply with notification requirements. He has a criminal record that includes convictions for theft and sexual activity with a child in 2010.
Judge Ian Unsworth, presiding over the case, acknowledged Cross's mental health condition and determined that a hospital order was the most appropriate sentence. He ordered Cross to be detained at Guild Lodge until he is considered well enough to return to the community.
The judge expressed his encouragement to Cross, stating, "The author of your presentence report makes the conclusion that at Guild Lodge you have been making very good progress. You have been receptive to your treatment and co-operating with staff. Everything you are doing is of positive note. I would urge you to continue to make the progress you are."
