String of sex assaults on teenage boys.

Yeovil Pensioner Jailed for Sexual Assaults Spanning Nearly 40 Years

Barry Dunthorn, 74, of Hendford Grove, Yeovil, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for a series of sexual assaults on young boys. The offenses occurred between 1981 and 2018 in South and East Somerset, targeting victims aged 12 to 16.

Dunthorn was found guilty of nine counts of sexual assault after a two-week trial at Taunton Crown Court. The charges included indecent assault, sexual activity with a child, and paying for the services of a child under 18.

The court heard that Dunthorn groomed his victims, offering them cash payments and gifts in exchange for sexual acts. The most recent offenses involved the sexual abuse of a 14-year-old victim, who received substantial cash sums over a year for engaging in sexual activity.

Judge HHJ Townsend commended the victims for their courage in coming forward and enduring the difficult process of reliving their abuse during the trial.

Investigating officer Andy Bath praised the victims' bravery and highlighted how Dunthorn's actions were carefully orchestrated. He arranged secret meetings and paid the victims to remain silent, demonstrating a complete lack of remorse. He was ultimately found guilty of all nine charges by the jury.

This sentence provides some solace to the victims, knowing their abuser will face consequences for his actions. It serves as a reminder that justice can be achieved, even after significant periods of time.
