Sex offender has been jailed for trying to work with vulnerable teenagers.
Registered Sex Offender Jailed for Breaching Court Order
Bruce Thomas Wayne, 33, has been sentenced to three years and seven months in prison for breaching a court order by attempting to work with vulnerable teenagers.
Wayne, of Watermint Way, Calne, had begun volunteering at a local community charity despite a police-imposed ban on such activity. He was caught when a member of the public recognized him from a news story about his previous conviction.
Wiltshire Police described Wayne as "a calculating and predatory offender."
A conviction in 2010, coupled with recent concerns regarding his behavior, led to a standalone sexual harm prevention order being imposed on Wayne in October 2020. The order prohibited him from taking on voluntary or paid work without informing his probation worker or becoming involved with any form of support group for children or adults.
However, Wayne, formerly known as Andrew Phillips, was found to be volunteering with a charity that provided support for individuals aged 14 to 70.
Wiltshire Police commended the "responsible" actions of the Calne-based organization, which prevented Wayne from working unsupervised until a criminal background check was completed. The charity alerted Wiltshire Police after reading a news story about Wayne's previous conviction.
PC Sarah Greenman stated: "Wayne tried to claim that he had misunderstood the terms of his order, but the judge rejected this claim, finding that what he was actually doing was trying to gain access to vulnerable teenagers."
"Registered sex offenders are subject to regular monitoring by the police, and I hope this case provides reassurance that if and when they try to breach any restrictions that are in place, then they are dealt with robustly by the police and the courts."
