Former Edinburgh SNP Activist Jailed for Sexually Assaulting Six Young Adults

Cameron Downing, 24, has been sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting six young adults. The abuse, which began when Downing was just 16 years old, spanned several years and took place at various locations across Scotland.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard how Downing's crimes continued until February 2023. Police launched an investigation after receiving reports of his activities, and during the probe, they discovered that Downing had repeatedly blackmailed one of his victims.

Downing threatened the 22-year-old man, saying he would make false allegations of rape against him to police, his friends, family, and employer if the man refused to engage in sexual activity. The victim testified that he felt trapped by Downing's threats.

Downing, a former drama student and equalities convenor for the SNP's London branch, denied any wrongdoing during his trial. He claimed he was battling complex mental health issues and was not threatening the victim. However, after two days of deliberations, the jury found Downing guilty on charges of sexual and physical assault.

Judge Alison Stirling remanded Downing in custody pending sentencing, stating, "Your status has changed." Downing will be sentenced on July 16, 2024.

Downing's case has garnered public attention due to his previous involvement with the SNP. In 2022, he made controversial tweets expressing hostility towards feminists and transphobes, leading to public criticism from figures like JK Rowling and SNP MP Joanna Cherry.

The court heard evidence from other victims, including a woman who described Downing as "a bit of a loaded gun" who could be "personal and nasty with people." She alleged that Downing had sexually assaulted her at a New Year's party in 2018.

Following his conviction, Downing was placed in handcuffs and taken to the cells of the high court. He turned to his family members in the courtroom and said, "I love you."
