Child rapist who sexually abused up to a dozen children for more than 30 years has resigned himself to dying in prison.
Halloran Jailed for Decades of Child Abuse
Christopher Halloran, 67, has been sentenced to over 20 years in prison at York Crown Court for the "systematic" sexual abuse of multiple children, some as young as three and four.
The court heard that Halloran, formerly of Eastleigh, groomed his victims, plying some with cigarettes and alcohol, and using "games of dare" to exploit them. The abuse spanned three decades, from 1986 to 2018, taking place at properties in Hampshire and Selby, North Yorkshire.
Prosecutor Paul Abrahams described the abuse as "systematic," with Halloran targeting both boys and girls. One victim recounted being sexually assaulted by Halloran in woods after he took her out in his car, while another was abused at a bird hide in North Yorkshire.
"He clearly groomed (the victim), buying her cigarettes and alcohol," said Mr. Abrahams. "This made (the girl) feel confused and trapped." The victim said she felt "sick and dirty" afterwards.
Halloran pleaded guilty to 26 charges, including two counts of rape, indecency with a child, sexual assault of children under 13, and assault by penetration. Eight other charges were left on file. He appeared for sentencing with some of his victims present in the public gallery.
The victims, who cannot be named for legal reasons, spoke of the enduring impact of Halloran's abuse. Some had lost their jobs or suffered health problems, while others had experienced marriage breakdowns and severe mental health issues, including depression, eating disorders, self-harm, and panic attacks.
Judge Andrew Stubbs QC described Halloran as "dangerous" to children and sentenced him to 19 years in prison. Upon release, he will be subject to an extended eight-year period on prison licence. Halloran was also ordered to sign on the sex offenders' register for life and made subject to a sexual-harm prevention order, also for life.
