David Howard, a former English teacher, was sentenced to six months imprisonment, suspended for eighteen months, after admitting to engaging in sexual activity with a 16-year-old student while in a position of trust.

Howard, who was 47 at the time of sentencing, groomed the victim with Valentine's Day cards, love letters, and gifts. He also spent time with her outside of school and engaged in phone conversations that often lasted for extended periods.

The court heard that Howard told the victim he was "besotted" with her and that their interactions took place in a cupboard at the end of the school day. The victim, now 38, reported the abuse to teachers but nothing happened.

In 2021, she reported Howard to police, leading to his arrest and conviction. Judge Charlotte Welsh described Howard's actions as "twisted" and "immoral," noting that he preyed on a vulnerable young girl.

The victim read her impact statement in court, detailing the lasting emotional trauma caused by Howard's abuse. She spoke of nightmares, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts, emphasizing the failure of the school system to protect her.

Howard's lawyer argued that his client was a different person now, remorseful for his actions and seeking counseling. However, Judge Welsh emphasized that Howard's behavior was abusive and had a profound impact on the victim's life.
