Convicted Sex Offender Jailed for Using Unregistered Mobile Phones

Gary Crandley, a 44-year-old resident of Carlisle, has been sentenced to four years in prison for violating a sexual harm prevention order. Crandley admitted to using two mobile phones with internet access without informing Cumbria Police, despite being banned from such devices in 2017.

The order, imposed in 2009 after Crandley was found in possession of indecent images of children, required him to notify authorities of any devices with internet access.

Crandley's violation came to light in November and December following an investigation by the Cumbria Police Management of Sexual and Violent Offenders team.

"Crandley was fully aware of the terms of the sexual harm prevention order imposed against him when he used a phone belonging to a friend," said Det Con Jessica Myers after sentencing. "He had not informed [the force] of his access to this and another phone, therefore he was arrested and our investigation has brought him to justice."

Myers emphasized the force's commitment to monitoring individuals subject to such orders. "We work hard to monitor and manage people who are subject to such orders," she said, adding that they will "do all we can" to hold offenders accountable for breaching the terms.
