Convicted: 21/07/2023

Pretended he had post-traumatic stress disorder punched a woman in the face and sexually assaulted her.

A man who pretended to have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) punched a woman in the face and sexually assaulted her in a Swansea hotel.

James Davies, 36, attended the Grand Hotel with a woman on August 19, 2022. They had consensual sex, but the victim later woke up to find Davies pacing the floor in an aggressive state after taking cocaine.

Swansea Crown Court heard that Davies's face changed and he began speaking in an Irish accent. The victim believed this was due to his claims of suffering from PTSD.

Davies told the victim he had served in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and witnessed a friend being blown up, leading to his PTSD. However, police investigations revealed this account to be false.

Davies then punched the victim in the face, made threats, and forced her to perform oral sex despite her pleas for him to stop. He also urinated on her.

The victim reported the assault to the police, who took her to Morriston Hospital for treatment. She sustained injuries including a swollen face, eye, and jaw.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, the woman stated: "I hope you can live with what you did to me, and always remember I am now happy and healthy with amazing support around me. I will have to live with the flashbacks but I will always be reminded of the strong courageous woman I am becoming."

Davies, who has no fixed address, pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine, two counts of actual bodily harm (ABH), two counts of rape, and assault by penetration.

Robin Rouch, Davies's defense attorney, stated: "There has been a fairly healthy period of reflection over the last year. It is going to be a healthy sentence regardless. This is his first custodial sentence and he is on a list for counselling and has asked to see a psychiatrist."

Judge Geraint Walters sentenced Davies to 11 years in prison, describing his actions as "nothing less than psychotic" and the incident as "terrifying."

Davies must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life and a restraining order preventing contact with his victim was also imposed.
