Horrific sex attacks on an underage girl.
Derbyshire Child Rapist Sentenced to 20 Years
James Herring, 51, of Chesterfield, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for multiple sexual offenses against an underage girl. He was found guilty by a jury at Derby Crown Court of rape, attempted rape, and sexual assault. The court heard how Herring groomed and then repeatedly raped the victim, who was under the age of consent, becoming her "tormentor and abuser." He even raped her on one occasion while she was asleep from excessive alcohol consumption.
Judge Shaun Smith QC, who described the sentencing in Herring's absence as a first in his 40-year legal career, spoke about the devastating impact of Herring's actions. He stated, "Until she met you she'd had a miserable life. You knew that and you took advantage becoming her tormentor and abuser. When you first raped her she was in such pain and distress she slept with a teddy bear between her legs. The consequence of what you did to her were laid bare when she gave her evidence. She ended up in prison, she took drugs and I have no doubt that happened because of the abuse she suffered at your hands. You gained her trust and you sexually abused her."
Herring was also found guilty of sexual assault against a second female victim. He denied all charges, forcing both victims to confront their abuser and provide evidence in court. Herring has a criminal history, including convictions for indecent assault and burglary dating back to the 1980s.
