Graduate Jailed for Raping Four Women, Sentence Reduced Due to Age

Logan Doig, 23, was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison at the High Court in Glasgow for a series of rapes and sexual assaults that occurred between March 2015 and November 2020.

The attacks took place in various locations including Forfar, Kirriemuir, Angus, and Dundee, as well as a property in Queen Margaret University, East Lothian, where one woman was violently attacked and raped in the student halls.

Doig was found guilty of 12 offenses, including five rape charges, by a jury last month. The judge, Lord Clark, sentenced him to an extended sentence of 12 and a half years, with nine and a half years to be served behind bars, and placed him on the sex offenders' register.

However, the judge stated that he had reduced Doig's sentence due to sentencing guidelines for young people. These guidelines suggest that individuals under 25 should receive lesser sentences due to their perceived lack of maturity and understanding of their actions.

Lord Clark commented, "I say you present a level of risk to the safety of women which makes an extended sentence necessary for the safety of the public. You were aged between 15 and 21 and I have to give careful consideration to the guidelines on sentencing young people."

This case follows a recent incident where a 17-year-old rape victim alleged that her attacker escaped justice under SNP-backed diversion from prosecution rules, which allowed his case to be referred to social workers instead of being brought to court.

Russell Findlay, Scottish Tory justice spokesman, criticized the guidelines, stating, "The guidelines seek to make excuses for the worst types of criminality with absolutely no consideration for the victims."
