Music Teacher Jailed for 11 Years for Grooming and Abuse of Young Girls

Matthew Birch, 45, a former police officer and music teacher, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for a campaign of grooming, abuse, and rape targeting young girls.

Birch, who worked at secondary schools in North Lanarkshire and Fife, was described as a fun teacher and a father figure. However, the court heard that he preyed on vulnerable girls with musical talent.

He was found guilty in December of nine charges, including rape and engaging in sexual activity while in a position of trust, spanning from 2006 to 2017.

Judge William Gallacher, presiding over the sentencing at the High Court in Glasgow, stated: "You have been convicted of a series of appalling crimes against young women. You abused your position of trust and exploited your victims for your own gratification."

The judge highlighted the significant impact Birch's actions had on his victims, emphasizing the lasting harm caused by his predatory behavior.
