Sex Offender Attempts to Rape Woman in Nightclub Toilet Cubicle

A 27-year-old sex offender, Olaf Koranteng, was sentenced to four years and one month in prison for attempting to rape a woman in a unisex toilet cubicle at Pulse nightclub in Cardiff on July 3, 2020.

Koranteng, who had arrived in the UK from Ghana less than a month before the attack, lured the victim into the cubicle and attempted to penetrate her with his penis. The victim, who has lifelong anonymity, described feeling "disgusting" and "petrified of strangers" after the incident.

The court heard that Koranteng had been searching the internet for casual sex and had used the search term "local slags" on the night of the attack. He was later arrested by police and told them he was having a "fun night meeting white people" and that he had "learnt his lesson."

The victim's personal statement detailed the emotional impact of the attack, stating that she "felt gross with the man's germs all over me" and that she "will never have trust in anyone again." She also described experiencing fear and anxiety as a result of the assault.

Koranteng's defense lawyer argued that he was "drunk and tired" and had "misread the signals in a major way." However, the judge, Recorder Bilal Siddique, rejected this argument, stating that Koranteng had "nearly managed to rape the victim" and was "looking for casual sexual encounters that night."

In addition to his prison sentence, Koranteng will face automatic deportation upon his release.
