Former Youth Leader Jailed for Historic Sexual Offences

A 73-year-old former youth leader has been sentenced to over ten years in prison for historic sexual offenses against two young boys.

Paul James Vaughan, of Emlyn Grove, Rhyl, was sentenced at Mold Crown Court. The charges stemmed from incidents dating back over 45 years, from 1977 to 1984, during his time as a youth leader in Rhyl.

Vaughan pleaded guilty to five counts of indecent assault against two boys and two counts of indecency with a child.

He was sentenced to a total of ten years and six months imprisonment and must register as a sex offender for life. He was also indefinitely banned from working with children and adults.

Detective Constable Gemma Smith, investigating officer, stated, "Paul Vaughan is a dangerous sexual predator who used his position of trust to abuse young boys left in his care. Child sexual abuse is extremely damaging and has a devastating effect on those children involved whose suffering continues throughout their adult lives."

She commended the bravery of the victims who spoke out after almost 40 years, stating, "They have showed courage and strength. I hope they can now focus on moving forward with their lives with the knowledge that their abuser is now being held accountable for his crimes."

Detective Constable Smith urged others to come forward, saying, "I would encourage any other victims of historical sexual abuse to come forward safe in the knowledge that we will do everything in our power to pursue offenders and protect the most vulnerable in our society."
