Teacher who was caught with dozens of indecent images of children.
Teacher Escapes Jail After Admitting to Possessing Child Abuse Images
Philip Scott, a former history teacher at Springwood High School in King's Lynn, has escaped jail after admitting to possessing dozens of indecent images of children on his computer. Scott pleaded guilty to 10 counts of making and possessing indecent images of children, as well as two counts of possessing extreme pornographic images involving adult women.
The 44-year-old was arrested in January after police received a tip-off from Lincolnshire authorities who had been monitoring activity on a website. Upon arriving at Scott's home, police discovered numerous images of children on his computer, ranging from level one to level four on the Copine scale, a measure used to grade the severity of such images. Level five images are considered the most serious.
Judge Gareth Hawkesworth at Cambridge Crown Court sentenced Scott to an eight-month suspended sentence, ordering him to sign the sex offenders register for 10 years. The judge highlighted the gravity of the offenses, stating that Scott's actions directly contributed to the abuse of children and fueled violent behavior towards women.
Despite the seriousness of the charges, Scott avoided immediate imprisonment. He was suspended from his teaching position following his arrest and ultimately dismissed in August after entering a guilty plea. The judge also ruled that Scott would be prohibited from working with children under the age of 16 and must complete an internet sex offenders course.
In mitigation, Dylan Moses argued that Scott was a man of previous good character and a highly regarded teacher. However, the judge acknowledged the significant impact of Scott's actions, stating that he had "squandered his own career" by engaging in this illegal behavior.
