Robert Long: Convicted Rapist Breaches Sex Offender Register Rules
Robert Long, a convicted rapist from Wigton, Cumbria, has been charged with failing to disclose usernames for three online accounts, violating the terms of his registration on the Sex Offender Register.
Long, 29, was originally jailed in 2017 for eight years after being convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl. The judge at the time described Long's actions as showing "no compassion" for his victim, who suffered physical and emotional trauma.
As a registered sex offender, Long is required to inform the police of any new online accounts he creates within three days. He failed to do so for accounts on Twitch, Instagram, and Apple Gaming.
His defense attorney argued that two of the accounts were inactive and old, while the breach regarding Apple Gaming was an oversight. She emphasized Long's efforts to rebuild his life, working as a farmhand and living with his mother and her partner.
Despite these mitigating factors, Deputy District Judge Simon Blakebrough adjourned sentencing pending a pre-sentence report to assess risk due to the seriousness of Long's previous offenses. He ordered Long to cooperate fully with the Probation Service.
