A rapist who filmed himself attacking unconscious women has had his "unduly lenient" prison sentence extended.
Rapist's Sentence Increased After Filming Attacks on Unconscious Women
Romeo Cummins, 44, of Basingstoke, Hampshire, has had his prison sentence extended after being found guilty of filming himself raping unconscious women. Cummins was originally sentenced to 13 and a half years, with the possibility of parole after serving half his term. However, the Court of Appeal has increased his sentence to life with a minimum of nine years, eliminating the automatic right to release.
Cummins pleaded guilty to 16 counts of rape, sexual assault, and five drug offenses. Police discovered over 100 videos on his phone depicting him sexually assaulting unconscious victims. These attacks occurred over a period of three years.
Cummins was arrested in Aldershot in February while in possession of crack cocaine, heroin, and sleeping tablets. The investigation revealed the disturbing videos, leading to the charges against him.
The Solicitor General, Robert Buckland QC MP, referred Cummins' sentence to the Court of Appeal, arguing that it was unduly lenient. He emphasized the severity of the crimes, highlighting the number of victims, the duration of the offenses, and the vulnerability of the women involved.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary stated that the video footage clearly indicated that the victims were unaware of the sexual assaults they endured. Detective Sergeant Lisa Cronin expressed satisfaction with the increased sentence, stating that it accurately reflects the nature of Cummins' crimes and the significant impact they have had on his victims.
