Sexual Predator Jailed for Attacking Sleeping Woman

Ross Laing, 21, of Maxwell Place, Coatbridge, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for sexually assaulting a sleeping woman.

The attack occurred on August 15, 2022, at Laing's home. The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sleeping when Laing penetrated her with his fingers and placed his hand under her clothing, causing her to awaken.

Following a trial at Airdrie Sheriff Court, a jury found Laing guilty by a majority verdict. The jury heard how Laing grabbed the woman by the shoulder, pulled her onto her back, and attempted to prevent her from leaving the room.

Laing was acquitted of a second sexual charge, which alleged that he had sexually assaulted another woman at his home on the same day. The jury found the case against him not proven.

Sheriff Frank Pieri sentenced Laing to 18 months in prison and placed him on the sex offenders register.
