GMP Detective Jailed for 26 Years for Rape and Child Sexual Offences
A former Greater Manchester Police (GMP) detective, Stephen Hardy (born 08/07/77), has been sentenced to 26 years in prison for 20 offences, including rape and child sexual offences. Hardy, who was stationed in GMP's Stockport district, had been on remand since his conviction in July 2023 at Liverpool Crown Court.
The conviction followed a courageous disclosure by a victim and a thorough investigation conducted by Detective Sergeant Abigail Thomas and Tameside CID. Hardy was found guilty of committing these serious sexual offences while off duty.
The 26-year sentence includes an additional six years on extended licence. Hardy has been classified as a dangerous offender, meaning he will not be automatically released after serving two-thirds of his sentence.
He has also been issued with a restraining order and will be required to register as a sex offender for life.
Now that the criminal proceedings have concluded, gross misconduct proceedings against Hardy will be initiated by GMP.
