Former policeman admitted possessing more than 8,000 indecent images of children.

Former Policeman Escapes Prison Sentence for Child Abuse Images

Stephen McGoldrick, 50, a former police officer with Gloucestershire Police, has avoided a prison sentence after pleading guilty to possessing over 8,000 indecent images of children.

McGoldrick, who resigned from the force following the charges, appeared at Bristol Crown Court on Wednesday for sentencing. Despite the severity of the offenses, Judge Peter Blair QC decided against a custodial sentence, instead opting for an 18-month community order with 40 days of rehabilitation and 150 hours of unpaid work.

The judge acknowledged the seriousness of the images, stating: "These were abhorrent images which I believe you now acknowledge and understand have real victims." He also emphasized McGoldrick's fall from grace due to his previous position as a police officer but recognized his demonstrated remorse.

The judge justified the community order, stating: "You must understand that I impose this sentence because I have concluded there is a good prospect of rehabilitation which can be best achieved through a community order rather than a custodial sentence. You fall into a category where the public will be better served by this type of sentence."

The investigation leading to McGoldrick's arrest began in April when police discovered indecent images on his mobile phone while investigating an unrelated matter. Further inquiries resulted in search warrants being executed at his residences in Stroud, Gloucestershire, and Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taf in June. Examination of seized electronic devices revealed a total of 8,519 indecent images, categorized as five category A, eight category B, and the remainder category C.

McGoldrick, who joined Gloucestershire Police in 2008, resigned prior to being charged in July. He pleaded guilty to the charges at the magistrates' court last month.

Defense attorney James Haskell acknowledged the significant consequences of the convictions for McGoldrick, stating: "The convictions have already had significant consequences for him. He knows he has forever lost his good character and is ashamed to have put his family through what he has."

Haskell explained McGoldrick's recent personal struggles, including supporting his partner financially through a protracted custody battle, resulting in significant debt. McGoldrick also grappled with his partner's cancer diagnosis, the death of his brother, and his mother's ill health.

Haskell attributed McGoldrick's actions to his overwhelming personal difficulties, stating: "All of this left him at almost breaking point and led him to accessing illegal pornography. He knows it was wrong but was clearly in a very bad way and, in his own words, he was on a path to self-destruction."
