Lincolnshire Gas Salesman Steven Smith Jailed for 13 Years For Eight Rape Charges

A dangerous Lincolnshire sex offender was today (Friday) jailed for 13 years. Steven Smith, 49, who is already serving a 14 year jail sentence for other sexual offences, was also made the subject of a five year extended licence period on his release from jail after a judge decided he was a danger to the public.

Smith was found guilty of eight rape charges after a trial at Lincoln Crown Court. The jury also convicted Smith of one count of voyeurism and one count of sexual assault on a child aged under-13.

Lincoln Crown Court was told Smith carried out the historic offences after moving from Bedford to Lincolnshire in the late 1990s to work as a gas and electric salesman. The offences only came to light in 2022 after Smith was convicted of sexual offences against three other victims in the Bedfordshire area during the 1990s.

Smith is already serving a 14 year jail sentence for those offences after being sentenced at Luton Crown Court in December 2022. Passing sentence Judge James House KC described Smith as a "sexual predator" and said it was clear his behaviour had left a life time of emotional scars for his three victims.

Judge James House KC told Smith there was very little mitigation. "You have shown no remorse, no regret, there is no credit for a guilty plea," Judge House said. Judge House added that Smith would serve his 13 year sentence consecutive to the 14 year jail term he is already serving. "You simply moved locations and found new victims," Judge House added.

Smith was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life and made the subject of a restraining order which prevents him from contacting his victims or their children. Judge House made it clear he had reduced Smith's jail term by five years because of the 14 year sentence he is already serving.
