Former Police Officer Stuart Trentham Jailed for Sexualized Messages to Crime Victim
A former police officer from Doncaster has been jailed for sending inappropriate and sexualized messages to a vulnerable woman he was investigating.
Stuart Trentham, 41, was a South Yorkshire Police officer when the woman reported that sexual images of her had been posted online without her consent. Trentham led the investigation but lied to the victim, claiming a suspect was being interviewed when the case had actually been closed.
The prosecution stated that Trentham's behavior became increasingly inappropriate, sending messages signed with kisses before progressing to comments about physical appearance. He told the woman he "liked a bit of meat" and made derogatory remarks about her body. The victim blocked Trentham but later unblocked him, believing he might still have information about the case.
Trentham then sent a picture of himself in uniform with the message "working hard," accompanied by winking and kissing emojis. The woman, who initially trusted Trentham, expressed in her victim personal statement that she had been exploited by him.
Judge Jeremy Richardson KC sentenced Trentham to nine months in prison, stating his actions undermined public trust in the police. He emphasized the concern that this type of offending could deter vulnerable women from reporting crimes. The judge acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating "It is a terrible day for you," while hoping the sentence would restore public confidence in law enforcement.
Trentham's defense attorney stated his client wished to apologize to the victim and former colleagues. Trentham had previously pleaded guilty to one count of willful misconduct. Following the sentencing, South Yorkshire Police released a statement condemning such behavior and reaffirming their commitment to upholding high standards within the force. They commended the victim for her courage in coming forward.
