Ex-councillor jailed for child sex offence after undercover Police sting.

Former Councillor Describes Prison Life as Better Than Local GP Practice

William Kirkbride, a former councillor who is currently serving a 28-month sentence for a child sex offence, has written a letter detailing his experiences behind bars. In the letter, obtained by the News and Star, Kirkbride, who is incarcerated at HM Prison Durham, describes the "joys of TV and tea on tap" and claims the prison's medical care is superior to that of local GPs.

Kirkbride, who arranged to meet an undercover police officer posing as a 14-year-old boy at Whitehaven train station, expresses gratitude for the amenities provided in prison, particularly the televisions and kettles in each cell. He also boasts about the medical services available, stating that he received a "clean bill of health" and benefited from the skills of a foot specialist.

The letter reveals that Kirkbride's release date is set for July 2023. He describes the prison cells as "pads" and praises the view of Durham Cathedral and the music from the recent Durham Miners Gala.

While Kirkbride acknowledges that "killing time is the main issue," he expresses a positive outlook on his situation, even comparing the prison library to a branch library. He also notes that the food, while similar to school or hospital meals, is "eatable."

A Prison Service spokesperson responded to Kirkbride's letter by stating that prisoners have access to a limited number of television channels under incentive schemes that encourage good behavior. They emphasized that these privileges can be revoked at any time.
