A 40-year-old man from Drongan has been added to the sex offenders register for assaulting a teenage girl on a bus.

William McMahon pleaded guilty at Ayr Sheriff Court to sexually assaulting the teenager while she was travelling from Ayr town centre to Drongan on September 22, 2024. The court heard that McMahon recognised the girl on the bus and attempted to get her attention before sitting beside her. Despite the girl repeatedly asking him to stop, McMahon placed his arms around her, pulled her towards him, touched her body, kissed her face, and licked her face.

The fiscal depute told the court that the girl was "extremely uncomfortable" and pushed McMahon away several times. She eventually moved seats, but McMahon continued to follow her and harass her.

Police were alerted after the incident, and footage of the assault was captured on the bus's CCTV system. McMahon was traced five days later and made no reply when cautioned and charged.

Sheriff Maria Kicinski ordered full criminal justice social work reports before sentencing McMahon. He was placed under the notification requirements of the sex offenders register and bailed under conditions not to approach or contact the victim.
